Residential alternative energy plans help to drive market competition and promote affordable utilities for end consumers of electricity and gas. By having robust and competitive energy plan options, customers can shop around to force producers and suppliers to reduce costs by alternative production methods, buying energy wholesale, streamlining administrative services and innovating with new concepts such as smart grid and metering technology.

In a traditionally regulated market, energy is usually produced and supplied to residences in a region by a single company. With deregulation and the rise of residential alternative energy plans, this single system can be split into highly competitive markets that drive innovation, efficiency and lowered costs at each step of the energy production and supply process.

During energy production, innovation can be driven by finding newer and better sources of energy that are able to drive more affordable utilities for residential consumers. For example, most typical energy companies currently rely on coal, but many areas might have a comparative advantage to produce wind or solar electricity, which, after the initial investment, have relatively low input and maintenance costs. If investments in these innovative sources of electricity are made, lifetime cost savings of production can be passed on to end residential consumers.

The supply side of the energy sector has seen tremendous growth in deregulated energy industries due to the ability to buy energy wholesale and improve administrative management and data processing. With wholesale energy markets, alternative energy suppliers can buy at the lowest prices available rather than a single energy producer. Additionally, alternative energy companies have an incentive to keep overhead costs under control by implementing innovative data processing systems such as smart grid and smart metering technology. Smart grids and meters help lower costs by providing real time information that allows consumers and the suppliers to prioritize energy efficiency in order to reduce costs.

Residential consumers will continue to provide a relatively stable demand for electricity and gas energy, but through a competitive marketplace, these consumers also drive the innovation and competition that lowers prices and makes utilities affordable.
