You have a new facility in need of backup power, or maybe you just want to ensure that your field teams can work at those sites the mains utility grid has not yet reached. Either way, your workers and operations are being hindered by your current power management, and you would like diesel gensets that can handle regular use.

Choosing the right genset, however, has turned out to be a major headache. You cannot simply pick the first generator you find, you must match your power needs with the power output rating of the genset.

Voltage and frequency ratings are the same standards used in American and European power distribution, 120 or 240VAC and 50 or 60Hz. What you need to worry about is the voltage and current derived power rating. This figure, generally given in kW or kVA, is a measure of how much power your generator can deliver at once. The more loads, or electrical components, your genset supplies, the greater the amount of power it must safely generate

Business diesel gensets intended as critical backup supplies for a single load or small facility need to be rated to handle more power than one anticipates using. This is the safest way to ensure that operating variability will not leave your genset struggling, but an automatic generator switch to handle transfers is also helpful.

Most houses can get by with 8 to 30 kW diesel gensets, while shops and small offices typically use 8 to 2000kW. These basic guideline figures are generally adequate for multiple loads and transient spikes caused by different equipment, but the best way to be sure is to check your past history

If you have a series of power bills, you can easily get an idea of your consumption by finding your last month kWh usage figure, or your monthly average kWh. Divide this number by 720, the number of hours in a 30 day month, and you will be left with an estimate of your average hourly power usage. Choose diesel gensets in excess of this number for the most reliable power supplies.
