There is always the right and wrong way to market your business. Although you would always want to do the right thing, there are instances when you do the wrong thing. With the wrong marketing technique, you are only risking your chance of getting more profits and sales, thus, restricting the success of your business. Look at your marketing tactic as your vehicle, your business as the vehicle and the marketing strategies as the engine. If you know where and how to get to your destination, your marketing strategies will get you there effectively while drawing in customers along the way. Otherwise, you could only crash.

There are actually several ways to attract customers. This can include direct mail such as postcards, advertisements, face to face meeting, phone calls, promotional events, and the more high tech strategies today that include web site and email. But if you have been using these techniques but are still not drawing in many customers, the problem could not be in the technique, but the strategy itself.

Keep in mind that without an efficient marketing strategy you are less likely to realize the output that you want. Even if you invest a lot of time and money, you won’t still be getting results. For instance, a high quality TV ad won't help your business succeed unless you are able to put in it a message that draws in your customers. A postcard printing can either end up in the trash bin or motivate your prospects to call you. In the same way an email can wind up in the delete bin or result in a call from your prospect.

You need to make sure that you are using the right technique in your business. So, what are the basic principles that you need to know about marketing? In most cases, you only think of your marketing technique when sales and profits are not going up as you expect them to be. Here are the principles you need to know to carry out an effective marketing strategy:

• Identify your goals. Before anything else, it is important that you decide on what you want to achieve in your business. Other than earning money, what other visions do you have in mind? What do you want to achieve in two or five years from now?

• Determine your target market. Many business owners make the mistake of marketing to everyone. Keep in mind that you cannot market to everyone at the same time. So, be sure to identify who are the people who want your products or services?

• Consider using the problem solving technique. It’s important that you focus your marketing strategy on the concerns and problems of your customers and not on yours.

• Tell people what you do. Although it is important to get your name in front of your prospect’s mind, this doesn’t tell them what you do and how you can help them. Be sure to provide your prospects an idea how you can provide solutions to their problems.

Creating the best marketing strategy may be the hardest part of your job, but you should not make it hard for yourself. Remember that when you know your goals and able to carry out an effective marketing strategy, your promotional campaign will be more focused and you can easily achieve business success.
