With the Democratic and Republican main campaigns already nicely under way, the American public is being involved in a significant examination of our national priorities and direction for the years ahead such as the issue of healthcare.
Based on a Kaiser Household Foundation poll in March, immediately after Iraq, healthcare will be the single most vital concern amongst American voters these days.
And healthcare is an concern that we will continue to face regardless of what happens on the international front. It directly affects all of us, our families, our pals, and our country.
Following the Congressional efforts to introduce government negotiations of prescription drug prices, and as the battles for the nominations progress, the question prior to us is; “What really should be the healthcare agenda for America?”
We as a nation face enormous challenges on the healthcare front. This country will be the property to essentially the most advanced medical expertise on the planet, but several of our citizens have little or no access to reasonably priced well being care.
And though our healthcare system has helped more and more Americans live longer and healthier lives, the medical requirements of a growing elderly population mean we should discover new and much better methods to support our system deliver the kinds and levels of care which are needed.
Americans want actual progress on healthcare. They want to see healthcare wants and problems addressed in a spirit of partnership, not partisanship. That’s means developing bi partisan solutions that reflect the best input and suggestions from Congress, the healthcare community, companies, labor unions, and not surprisingly the public.
What exactly is clear is that America wants everybody to work together in a constructive manner. If we do so, major progress is possible.
Medicare Component D marked a large bipartisan step forward in addressing the want for affordable access to prescription drugs for our senior citizens. Medicare Component D has succeeded because of its popularity and since it is working for men and women.
According to a Wall Street Journal / Harris Interactive poll:
* 68% of voters across the country said this program is a step inside the suitable direction.
* 70% of enrollees say the strategy has saved them income.
* 82% of enrollees say the strategy has been simple to make use of.

What can we take away from this?
By working together, the members of the two parties had been able to bring together the most beneficial suggestions from both sides of the aisle to generate a broad-based program that succeeds in achieving a lot of crucial goals.
It supplies affordable access for all our nation’s senior citizens, assures that participants will continue to have the opportunity to select among all of the newest drugs (instead of a pick, government-approved list), and supports America’s pharmaceutical investigation companies’ mission to develop newer and much more efficient drugs to address quite a few of our most urgent medical problems and conditions.
As necessary as this landmark step is, however, we still have significantly additional work to do to support the healthcare requirements of all Americans.
As Americans, polling shows we are all united around fundamental healthcare principles:
* Americans should have the chance to obtain the very best treatment in the world.* Americans need to have the freedom to opt for their own doctor and primary care provider.
* All Americans need to have fair access to healthcare and security from rising costs, especially expenses associated with catastrophic illness.
The public expects real action. 64% of respondents within the Kaiser Household Foundation/Harvard School of Public Wellness survey felt that the president and Congress can do a lot about the cost of well being care.
In terms of what should really be accomplished, the Kaiser poll discovered expanding coverage for the uninsured is at the top of the list of voter concerns. An overwhelming 85% want the government to do much more to assist present wellness insurance for more Americans. People from each and every component of the country want progress on controlling well being care costs, assuring access to medical care, and supplying the highest doable top quality of care.
67% want the President and Congress to improve spending on medical analysis for treatment and cures of diseases such as cancer, heart disease, and diabetes.
Polling has also shown strong support for:
* Supplying wellness insurance for all children.
* Supporting steps to enhance implementation of medical technologies to control costs and reduce medical errors.
* Training and locating doctors in rural areas and in economically deprived urban areas so that nobody is shut out from getting necessary care due to where they live.
* Increasing funding for medical study to help maintain our country as the world leader in medicine and medical remedies.
Healthcare ought to not develop into a partisan concern. We all have too significantly at stake to let actual progress get bogged down in political gridlock. This campaign season is the ideal time to put the emphasis where it belongs, and demand actual, practical, and cost-effective solutions to the healthcare challenge facing our nation.
