Macular degeneration affects the macula and in the long run the central vision. Macular degeneration occurs when part of the retina deteriorates. The macula is the central bit of the retina and it is in charge of color and detailed vision; this is the usual day to day vision like reading or even recognizing faces. There are two types of macular degeneration namely; wet and dry macular degeneration. The dry type is caused by the break down of some cells in the macula while the wet type is caused by development of blood vessels under the center of the retina. Most eye specialists recommend the antioxidants zeaxanthin and lutein for people suffering from age related macular degeneration or AMD. Zeaxanthin is one of the carotenoids contained in the eye within the retina. This carotenoid is the dominant component within the central macular.

Zeaxanthin is a carotenoid that is responsible for opposing damage to the macula of the eye from high energy blue wavelength light. The carotenoids are said to filter up to 90% of the visible blue wavelength light thus protecting the eye from damage. Zeaxanthin is high in antioxidant. Studies and research done over the years have shown that antioxidants can prevent cell damage and even the development of certain cancers by neutralizing free radicals. Therefore intake of zeaxanthin supplements can be very important for preventing vision loss from age related macular degeneration.

According to a report done by Dr. Johanna M. Seddon at Harvard University that was published in 1994 in the Journal of the American Medical Association, macular degeneration occurs due to lack of carotenoid accumulation in the outer retina. Scientific studies have been done and they have backed up this report. Meso- zeaxanthin is a very important antioxidant but the body is not able to produce it through the standard diet. There are bodies also with enzyme deficiencies that can prevent Meso-Zeaxanthin from forming. Therefore it is very important for people to take Meso-Zeaxanthin supplements to help the body accumulate enough of this carotenoid making it easy to conquer the problems of enzyme production.

Meso-Zeaxanthin supplement is very important to keep the proper carotenoids levels in check in the macula of the eye this way protecting the eye from harsh light and giving the body the antioxidants that it needs to prevent damage from free radicals. It is essential for the body to have the right concentration of carotenoids which are necessary in preventing further development of macular degeneration. These carotenoids are able to protect the eye from harsh light and provide the body with the antioxidants that it needs to prevent damage from free radicals. Meso-Zeaxanthin as a supplement can aid proper carotenoid accumulation, preventing certain types of serious vision loss and eye problems by ensuring proper pigment levels.

Through clinical trials and studies on age-related eye diseases, people at risk for developing ADM and those experiencing the disease can benefit from the addition of high levels of antioxidants such as Lutein, meso-zeaxanthin and zeaxanthin.
