As computers have spread from the office to almost every other aspect of industry and business, and modern displays have got flatter and more versatile, a requirement has developed to protect modern displays and monitors in harsh conditions such as factory floors, warehouses, and even outside when operating as outdoor digital signage.
Modern screens used in computing are very similar to the LCD TVs we use at home. Since their innovation in recent years, LCDs and plasmas, have now almost completely usurped other forms of television and display devices.
Because of their flat nature, modern screens can be installed almost anywhere without taking up the space their CRT predecessors did; however, modern LCD monitors are generally only designed to operate in warm offices and home environments which poses a problem for computing in more hostile locations.
For providing process information in factories, information in warehouses or uses as an outdoor digital signage display, any LCD screen taken out of the home or office is going to need protecting.
Monitor enclosures are designed to accommodate computer screens, whether they are traditional CRT screens or LCD displays (or plasma), and allow their use in all sorts of locations not ideally suited for their use.
In factory and warehouse locations, a common problem is the amount of dirt and grime about. Almost any substance can constitute dust and dirt found in these locations from organic matter to metallic elements and these can disable a screen very quickly. Not only can dust cause a screen to overheat as it blocks filters, but it can clog up moving parts like cooling fans and can even cause short circuits.
Another common element that can disable monitors used in these locations is liquids. Water used in wash down locations, other liquids, and rainfall outside if a monitor is being used as outdoor digital signage, will all disable a monitor or screen if not protected against.
Monitor enclosures are utilized in all sorts of locations from factory floors, warehouses and even hygienic locations like food processing plants, where wash down is an important consideration for all equipment.
Monitor enclosures not only keep liquids and dust away from the display but they also have other features, which allows their use in hostile locations-temperature control.
Temperature is an important consideration for using monitor’s in these hostile locations as temperatures in industrial, factory and outdoor locations are often outside the operating range of most monitor’s and displays.
High temperatures can lead to monitors overheating, while temperatures that get too low can also disable a screen if any condensation is allowed to freeze-leading to expansion.
Inside a monitor enclosure cooling fans, heaters and even air conditioners are installed to ensure the internal temperature always remains at the optimum for the enclosed device. These thermostatic devices enable monitors to be used in extreme temperature conditions and for outdoor digital signage means the screen can operate in both summer and winter.
Another form of protection a monitor enclosure offers is physical defense against impacts and shock. Industrial locations are often full of hazardous equipment such as forklifts and pallet trucks, and accidental impacts can be commonplace. Most monitor enclosures are manufactured from steel and usually have some form of shatterproof screen which means they can take quite severe knocks and impacts.
Monitor enclosure are being used worldwide for allowing computer monitors, information screens and outdoor digital signage to function in some of the most hostile locations, from industrial, factory to outdoor locations.
